Director, Strategic Communications

Resources Safety & Health Queensland (RSHQ) is an independent statutory body responsible for regulating safety and health in the state’s resources industries including coal mines, mineral mines and quarries, explosives and petroleum and gas.

The Director, Strategic Communications leads RSHQ’s multi-disciplinary communications team to develop and enhance how we use communications and engagement as a regulatory tool to drive improved safety and health outcomes in industry. This includes strategic development of initiatives that support RSHQ’s regulatory and organisational objectives, enhance RSHQ’s reputation and manage risk. These include campaigns, crisis communication, media issues management and delivery of a range of communication and engagement services across the agency to support both internal and external engagement with a diverse range of stakeholders.

Key Accountabilities

  • Lead the development and execution of stakeholder communication and engagement strategies that enable RSHQ’s goals and objectives and build and enhance its reputation and influence.
  • Guide the creation of content and its distribution through multiple channels.
  • Cultivate and maintain strong collaborative relationships with both internal and external stakeholders to ensure efficient, effective, and timely delivery of communication products and services, including government/ministerial briefings, crisis communication, media issues management and messaging.
  • Provide high-level advisory services as a strategic business partner to RSHQ’s executive leadership team and other stakeholders to ensure that messaging and communication initiatives align with RSHQ’s strategic objectives.
  • Oversee and lead the performance and strategic direction of the Strategic Communications team, sustainably managing resources effectively to foster optimal organisational performance and advance RSHQ’s priorities.

Key challenges

  • Providing strategic insights and advice in the ongoing development of communications and engagement matters to achieve a range of complex organisational and regulatory objectives. 
  • Demonstrating financial stewardship, efficiently managing team resources and prioritising workloads to deliver outcomes. 
  • Managing consultation and negotiations with diverse stakeholders, given the need to balance competing interests and demands which are often changing and unpredictable.
