The Board of Examiners (metalliferous and coal mining) purpose is to protect workers by ensuring only suitably qualified and competent people are entrusted with key mining roles in the metalliferous and coal mining industries in Queensland.
The Expert Assessment Member provides independent, specialist expertise in the assessment of technical or safety competencies for individuals seeking statutory certification within Queensland’s mining and resources sector.
This role supports the Chairperson of the Board of Examiners in ensuring integrity, fairness and rigour of competency-based assessments, ensuring certification decisions are evaluated to a high standard ensuring public confidence in Queensland’s mining regulatory framework and promoting a culture of safety and competency.
Key accountabilities
- Contribute specialist knowledge to the design, implementation, and evaluation of competency-based assessment frameworks and methodologies.
- Provide authoritative advice on best practices in assessing technical and safety-critical capabilities and qualifications, including non-routine and high-risk competencies.
- Participate in the review, refinement and continuous improvement of examination content and assessment tools and performance standards.
- Offer guidance on complex assessment issues and borderline candidate cases.
- Provide mentorship and guidance to other assessors or board members to build capacity and ensure consistency in assessment practices.
- Promote a culture of fairness, transparency and accountability in all aspects of the Board’s work.
- Support the Board’s regulatory and governance objectives by upholding a culture of competence and safety.

Key knowledge and experience
- Formal training or qualifications in competency-based assessment.
- Experience in examining, auditing, or regulating safety systems or professional qualifications.
- Analytical skills and the ability to make impartial, evidence-based decision-making.
- Applicants must have demonstrated expertise in the assessment of technical or safety competencies (not necessarily mining-specific).
- Experience in examining, auditing, or regulating safety systems or professional qualifications is desirable.
- High ethical standards and regulatory acumen and a commitment to fairness and transparency in assessments.
- Strong written and verbal communication skills to provide clear advice and contribute to Board discussions.
