Resources Safety & Health Queensland (RSHQ) is an independent statutory body responsible for regulating safety and health in the state’s resources industries including coal mines, mineral mines and quarries, explosives and petroleum and gas.

Operating from within the Safety in Mines Testing and Research Station (Simtars), the Product and Operations Manager leads the SafeGas Team, within the Mine Safety Technology Research Centre (MSTRC), Simtars, to deliver a range of commercial and levy-funded services to the mining industry.

Reporting to the Director – Mine Safety Technology (MST), this role is responsible for the development, maintenance, commissioning and support for mine gas monitoring software systems. The team is also responsible for providing emergency and technical on-call support, equipment supply and training, both remotely and at mine sites.

Key Accountabilities:

  • Provide strategic leadership and technical oversight to a multidisciplinary team delivering key services to Australia’s underground coal mines.
  • Manage the team to support, maintain, and develop the SafeGas software system, used for underground gas monitoring throughout Australia.
  • Assist the Principal Scientist MST to deliver and maintain support for emergency response, commercial services, industry advice and research. This includes supporting investigations and providing advice to the regulator.
  • Project-manage new site installations, commissioning, and updates of SafeGas systems.
  • Develop strong working relationships with stakeholders to gain feedback and insights for future product roadmap planning and development.
  • Prepare proposals, estimates and quotations for SafeGas projects.
  • Supervise the SafeGas team to prioritise and schedule workloads, manage projects, liaise with staff at all levels of the organisation and external clients.
  • Co-ordinate and participate in both logistics and the provision of the 24/7 mine emergency response capability and service.
  • Co-ordinate and participate in the provision of the 24/7 technical support helpline service for SafeGas.
  • Ensure that all mines under support contract have an effective service maintained at all times (as required: the ability to connect, store data, correct operation mode, accurate record keeping).

You will possess the relevant background and experience in industrial process control, monitoring, and instrumentation systems.  A proven ability to lead, supervise and participate in multi-disciplinary teams to design, implement and complete complex technical and software development projects is desirable.

Demonstrated project management experience and success in a similar role, and you will also be skilled in inspiring individuals and teams in the pursuit of world class service delivery and public-sector management.
